We want to include examples of cut stones along with the synthetic rough to show how beautiful they are when finished. Since you enjoy cutting gems anyway, why not win prizes along the way? Your gemstone creation may be selected to appear in the photos of the stones as examples of the synthetics we sell. You need to cut what we have available and mail it to us so we can take pictures.
1) Material: The material must be synthetic and must be purchased from
PrettyRock.com
It can be any color and either CZ or synthetic corundum.
There are 20 different colors to choose from, and each color will have a winner.
You are welcome to enter the contest more than once in different colors, but only one stone per color.
2) Cut: The cut for this contest is the Portuguese Cut
The finished stone must have a minimum of 145 facets, and be at least 2 ct.
An example of a Portuguese cut can be seen here:
http://www.umanitoba.ca/geoscience/faculty/arc/portuguese.html
This is not the exact design you have to cut, rather, it just needs to be in the same family.
If your gem has 145 or more facets and is 2 carats or more, and has a round girdle, it’s a contestant!
3) Prizes: There will be 3 overall winners.
1st Prize - $250 worth of faceting rough (winner’s choice)
2nd Prize - $150 worth of faceting rough (winner’s choice)
3rd Prize - $50 worth of faceting rough (winner’s choice)
There will also be a winner for each type/color of synthetic.
Each type/color winner will receive a PrettyRock.com Faceting Competition Winner T-shirt and some other surprise goodies! (That’s 23 chances to win!) (One T-Shirt per faceter.)
4) Judging: The stones will be judge by a group of faceters and gem lovers. They will be invited over, plied with pizza and beer and asked to judge the stones. The stones will be judged blind (meaning your name will not be on it, not that the judges will be blindfolded. Although if there is a tie, we may have to resort to such measures.) The scores will be tallied, and the decision of the judges is final.

5) Judging Criteria: Unlike many faceting contests, this is not about perfection. This is an old-fashioned beauty contest. After all we are PrettyRock.com not perfectrock.com! If you cut a stunner of a stone, but some of the meetpoints don’t match, you still have a solid chance of winning.
1. Beauty
2. Light return
3. Best use of material
6) Timeline: Entries must be received by March 1, 2010. Winners will be announced soon thereafter once we get the judges’ scores. Winners will be announced on the website, forum, blog and individual winners will be notified by email.
7) Legal Stuff: By entering the competition you agree to the following:

You allow us to photograph your gem and use the image for marketing.
We are not responsible for items lost in transit by any postal service.
Only stones cut by the entrant will be considered. If we have any doubt that the stone was cut by you or using our material, we will disqualify it.
