1) Material: The material must be rutilated quartz. For our purposes we are going with this definition of rutilated quartz:
Rutilated quartz is quite simple quartz stone with rutile enclosures. Rutile is a mineral that is made up mostly of titanium dioxide, or TiO2. As a mineral, rutile is very high on the refractive index and disperses more than almost any other mineral. This means that when rutile appears in other minerals, it almost always appears in long, thin shots of color. Rutilus is, in fact, the Latin word for red. The mineral gained this name because some specimens are a lovely deep red color. Rutile, however, can also appear in brown and gray tones. ~ from WiseGeek.com
No, we are not going to be testing the stones to be sure the inclusions are rutile. As long as there are long needles of something in there...it works for us.
We will have this material available at PrettyRock.com for purchase, but it does NOT have to be purchased from us to be entered in the contest. So, if you have some stuck in the back of your drawer, this is the time to dig it out and do something with it!
2) Size ALL entries must be between 1 and 150 cts. Larger or smaller stones will be disqualified.
3) Categories: There will be two categories: Faceting and Cabbing. It is up to you to decide which category best suites your stone.
4) Prizes: One Best in Show with a Grand Prize of $500 worth of faceting rough (winner’s choice)
There will also be two winners in each category:
1st Prize - $150 worth of faceting rough (winner’s choice)
2nd Prize - $100 worth of faceting rough (winner’s choice)
HALL of FAME: Anyone who places two years (or more) in a row, will be inducted into our Faceter’s Hall of Fame! They will also win the honor and privilege to use the rare and much sought after GPF ™(Grande Poobah Faceter) after their name on all official faceting documents.
5) Judging: The stones will be judge by a group of faceters and gem lovers. They will be invited over, plied with pizza and beer and asked to judge the stones. The stones will be judged blind (meaning your name will not be on it, not that the judges will be blindfolded. Although if there is a tie, we may have to resort to such measures.) The scores will be tallied, and the decision of the judges is final.

6) Judging Criteria: Stones must be the appropriate material and size. Unlike many faceting contests, this is not about perfection. This is an old-fashioned beauty contest. After all we are PrettyRock.com not perfectrock.com! If you cut a stunner of a stone, but some of the meetpoints don’t match, you still have a solid chance of winning.
1. Beauty 2. Light return 3. Best use of material 4. Making the judges go "ooooooooooooooo"
7) Timeline: Entries must be received by March 1, 2012. Winners will be announced on or before April 1, 2012. Winners will be announced on the website, blog and individual winners will be notified by email.
8) Legal Stuff: By entering the competition you agree to the following:

You allow us to photograph your gem and use the image for marketing or products such as note cards or calendars.
We are not responsible for items lost in transit by any postal service.
Only stones cut by the entrant will be considered. If we have any doubt that the stone was cut by you, we will disqualify it.
We reserve the right to disqualify stones without explanation.
Any legalities we forgot, please assume.

9) Submissions: The competition is open to faceters anywhere in the world. Incomplete entry forms will be disqualified. There is no entry fee. We will return the stone to you after judging.
We highly suggest entries be shipped with delivery or signature confirmation. Please ship gems in a suitable, protective container such as a small plastic gem jar for its protection.
