How to Use a Jeweler's Eye

Jeweler's Eye Instructions - Step by Step
Label Description Instructions
1 Analog Gauge This analog gauge shows a range of gem materials and their luster properties. There is a needle on this gauge that will display the luster of the gem being measured.
2 Gemstone Meter This small platform has a tiny hole in it where the luster measurement will be taken by the instrument. Place the gemstone flush to the opening.
3 Activate Meter Button Press down the meter button and hold it down. The needle will move along the analog luster guage and show you the luster of the gemstone.
Preparation Complete   With the gemstone flush to the gemstone meter and the activate meter button depressed, slowly and ever so little move the gemstone on top of the pinhole where the reading is taking place. Make certain the gem does not move off of the pinhole completely. The analog gauge needle will move about while you are moving the gemstone.

Note the highest and lowest readings and the reading where the needle stays the longest. Generally the most steady needle location is most likely the type of gem you are testing. However, this is not a definitive test and you should rely of several gem property tests to confirm the findings.
Disclaimer CYA! I am no expert! I use these tools as best I can, but I am not a graduate gemologist by any means. I try to keep it simple as much for me as for you, so please use this as a starting point and when you get in deep, consult your books and experts. Thanks!
